Join Fr Patrick Mphepo on this pilgrimage to Medjugorje, with tours of Dubrovnik and Istanbul.
Friday, October 16, 2020
We meet at OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg for our flight departing at 18:10 to begin our journey to Medjugorje, the historic city of Dubrovnik in Croatia and Istanbul, the ancient Constantinople.
Saturday, October 17
Today we explore Istanbul, the ancient Constantinople. Here we have a tour of the great sites of the ancient, including the famous Hagia Sophia (once one of the three greatest churches in Christendom), the Blue Mosque, the Roman Hippodrome and other impressive places. We then transfer to the airport for our flight to Dubrovnik in Croatia. Overnight: Dubrovnik
Sunday, October 18
Today our guide shows us all about Dubrovnik, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site with its medieval fortresses. Note the many statues of the city’s patron, St Blaise, who is known Croatian as Sveti Vlaho, after whom the city’s most popular church is named. We also visit the Renaissance St Saviour Church, next to the popular Franciscan Church and Monastery. The Cathedral of Dubrovnik from the 18th century is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (South Africa’s patroness). The fortress-like Dominican Monastery is now a famous library. At the Little Brothers Monastery we see Europe’s third-oldest pharmacy, which is still in operation ever since it opened in 1317. We see the Big Onofrio’s fountain of 1438, and Renaissance buildings like the Sponza Palace and the Rector’s Palace. Overnight: Dubrovnik
Monday, October 19
After breakfast in our centrally-located hotel, we have the full day at leisure, giving us a chance to relax on Dubrovnik’s beaches, walk on the ancient city walls, or explore the beautiful old city in our time — and maybe do some shopping. Overnight: Dubrovnik
Tuesday, October 20
After breakfast, we proceed on a 2,5 hour drive through the Croatian and Bosnian countryside to reach Medjugorje around mid-day. On arrival there we settle in our hotel. In the evening we participate in the Joyful and Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary, Holy Mass, Blessings of Objects, Prayer for health of soul and body, and the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary. Overnight: Medjugorje
Wednesday, October 21 & Thursday, October 22 & Friday, October 23
These three days in Medjugorje are devoted entirely to Our Lady and her Son Jesus. There will be opportunity with encounters with visionaries of Medjugorje. Three of the visionaries still see the Blessed Virgin every evening during the recitation of the Rosary at 18:40. There will be time for prayer, silent adoration and, if requested, confession.
We climb the Hill of the Apparitions where bronze plaques depicting the Mysteries of the Rosary help us meditate on the life of Our Lord. On top is the site of the first apparitions of the Virgin, a place of contemplation.
We also follow the Way of the Cross on Mount Krisevac. The massive cross on the peak was erected long before the apparitions, in 1934 to mark the 1,900th anniversary of the Death and Resurrection of Jesus. Overnight: Medjugorje
Saturday, October 24
We complete our programme in Medjugorje and then return to Dubrovnik, where we have the afternoon at leisure. We then transfer to the airport for our flight home.
Sunday, October 25
We land in Johannesburg at 10:20 am, spiritually refreshed after spending prayerful time with Our Lady.
